Commercial and Industrial Building Permits

You’ll need a building permit to build a brand new building, complete tenant improvements, renovate an existing space, or change the use of a space (ie: from a retail store to a restaurant).

To apply for a Building Permit for a commercial or industrial project you will need:

  • Building Permit Application (pdf)
  • Three full sets of working drawings which include all the information as outlined on the Pre-Screening form
  • Additional documents such as schedules or mechanical drawings as outlined on the Pre-Screening form
  • 3 sets of sprinkler drawings and specifications where applicable

Here are some things to keep in mind when making an application:

  • Incomplete application packages will not be processed and returned to the applicant
  • Once a permit has been reviewed by a Safety Codes Officer it cannot be released until all applicable sub trades (gas, plumbing, heating, and electrical) have obtained their permits
  • It could take four or more weeks for an application to be reviewed and processed
