Green Cart pickup kicks off this week

April 10, 2018 12:36 PM
(Red Deer, Alberta)

You’ve waited, you’ve collected, you’ve been patient and now the time has come to roll those Green Carts out for collection.

Green Cart pick up begins this week, on your regular garbage day; in the same location you normally place your garbage (front street or back alley). Green Carts will be collected each week, alongside your regular garbage and blue box.

“Throughout the months of February and March, Green Carts rolled out to homes across the city, allowing residents to get acquainted with these modern organic waste containers, and prepare for our first week of pick up,” said City Manager, Craig Curtis. “This week I am pleased to see a new waste management program moving forward in Red Deer to support increased recycling in our city.”

Green Carts were delivered to all homes that currently receive individual garbage and blue box pickup. The Green Carts arrived with a kitchen container and an information booklet to help residents get acquainted with the new system.

To ensure the first few weeks of collection go smoothly, The City is reminding residents of the importance of proper cart placement for collection. Because of the new automated collection system, carts need to be placed on a flat surface with one metre of clearance on all sides of the cart, including behind.

“There is so much of your regular day to day waste that can be diverted into the Green Cart. Not only can you deposit all your regular yard waste like grass clippings, leaves and small branches, you can also put in table and food scraps, processed food, cooked meat, poultry carcasses, greasy paper towel and pet waste,” said Janet Whitesell, Waste Management Superintendent. “Results from the cart pilot program, which began in 2015 and involved 2,000 residents, showed households were able to reduce their garbage by 39 per cent. That’s 39 per cent of waste not heading into our landfill – and that’s amazing,”

All of these items diverted into the Green Cart works to lessen the amount of waste we are putting in the landfill, and works toward the next phase of the program: Blue Carts in replacement of the current blue box program and new Black Carts for remaining waste. This next phase of the cart program will be rolling out in the spring of 2019.
