Blue and black carts rolling out to pilot program households

Households that are part of the Green Cart pilot program will launch phase two of the program next week when they start using two new carts – the Blue Cart and the Black Cart.

The new carts round out the cart family pilot program which will be ongoing for the next two years. The 2,000 pilot households that received Green Carts in 2015 will now have a cart for each type of waste – the Green Cart for organics, the Blue Cart for recycling and the Black Cart for garbage.

“The response to the Green Carts so far has been really positive so we’re excited to get started on the next phase of the program,” said Keran Braich, Waste Diversion Specialist. “This is all part of our long-term plan to reduce waste and associated greenhouse gas emissions through a sustainable residential waste collection system.”

The Green Cart program rolled out last year for pilot families to deposit their organics, such as yard waste, food scraps and pet waste, in a City-provided Green Cart for year-round, regular pickup and composting.

The new Blue Carts for recycling will allow pilot households to deposit their recycling including newspapers, numbered plastics, metal cans and cardboard for year-round, bi-weekly pickup. The Black Carts are provided for any leftover waste and will also be picked up bi-weekly. The introduction of an automated cart system was outlined as one of many waste diversion strategies in The City’s Waste Management Master Plan.

“The pilot households are playing a crucial role in helping us understand what works with this program, and what doesn’t,” said Braich. “Their experiences and opinions are helping to lay the groundwork for what could be the future of residential waste collection in Red Deer.”

Participating households were chosen to reflect a range of demographics. If the pilot program is successful, the carts system could be introduced to all households across Red Deer in 2018. For more information on the cart system pilot program, visit reddeer.ca/waste.
