Census workers to go door to door after online option wraps up

April 15, 2016 3:58 PM
(Red Deer, Alberta)

City census enumerators will start knocking on doors today now that the online option is closed with 38 per cent of Red Deerians using the online tool. As well, five per cent of households reported their census information by phone. Residents who did not submit their census information online will be visited by enumerators sometime over the next couple of weeks.

“Collecting Census information is more than just determining our population,” said Leonie Becker, Legislative Services Project Coordinator. “It’s about getting an accurate snapshot in time and helping us to better understand community needs to plan for future growth and development.”

Enumerators will ask about the number of people living in the household, as well as the sex and year of birth of each person in the house. Any information given to enumerators is confidential. Enumerators will carry City identification and some will be using tablets to collect the data. Citizens with any questions about the identity of a census worker should phone The City census office at 403-342-8317.

The City will also conduct a quality assurance check, as required by the Alberta Provincial Government. While collecting responses, census staff will ask residents if they are willing to participate in the random quality assurance check, by phone, to confirm the address and how many people live in the home.

Citizens can also call in to the census office at 403-342-8317 to complete the census over the phone. The 2016 municipal census is scheduled to wrap up by May 9. Census results will be released and posted at http://www.reddeer.ca/census in the following months.

The incentive draw for the tablet, part of the online campaign, will take place on Monday.
