(Red Deer, Alberta)

The demolition and construction process for Discovery Canyon began earlier this month, and today, The City of Red Deer presented plans for the water feature, and further development of cross country/biathlon ski trails in the area.

Discovery Canyon, located in the River Bend Golf and Recreation Area, is one of Red Deer’s most popular outdoor water features. The area closed for the 2016 season in order to complete extensive renovations to modernize, improve site safety and enhance the seasonal water park.

Re-opening in 2017, the water feature will see repair and renovation to the stream bed, improved access and accessibility, and expanded beach and playground areas.

“We are looking forward to providing this space and opportunity for Red Deerians to enjoy the natural beauty of the Red Deer river valley throughout the summer and winter season, while also readying Red Deer for the 2019 Canada Winter Games”, said Curtis Martinek, Project Superintendent.

Work will continue through the fall and winter to include enhancement of the trail system and amenities related to the 2019 Canada Winter Games Biathlon and Cross Country events.

During this time, many of the existing trails will remain open to the public but some of the cross-country ski trails throughout River Bend will be closed from winter 2016 until fall 2017 in order to complete the work.

Visitors are reminded to obey posted signage and remain a safe distance away from construction activity in the area.
