Pay your property taxes today - avoid late penalties

(Red Deer, Alberta)

Property owners only have one more week to pay their 2016 property taxes, due Thursday, June 30.

Tax roll account numbers have changed this year, the updated roll number can be found on the tax notice. Taxpayers are reminded to ensure that the new roll number is used when making payments.

There are many ways that property tax payments can be made. Most financial institutions accept payment, or many residents are now choosing to pay their property taxes through online banking or by telephone banking. It is important that property owners know their bank’s processing and cut-off times and allow sufficient time for payment to reach The City of Red Deer.

Tax payments can be made by coming in-person to the City Hall cashiers. The deadline for in-person payments at City Hall is Thursday, June 30 by 4:30 p.m.

Payments can typically be sent by mail, but property owners who have not yet mailed their property tax payments are encouraged to use another payment option as a strike of the Canada Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) is expected in early July; therefore, mail delivery is not guaranteed. If you mailed your payment after June 17, you may want to consider cancelling and resubmitting your payment in another way.

Residents must ensure their payments are postmarked by Canada Post by June 30 to avoid penalty. No penalties will be waived despite the expected mailing interruption.

Property owners who miss the payment deadline have to pay a seven per cent penalty on the outstanding property taxes owing. For example, if $2,000 is left unpaid after the due date, a penalty of seven per cent or $140 would be applied to the account.
