(Red Deer, Alberta)

Participating in the 2016 municipal census is easier than ever with options to complete the census online, over the phone and in person when enumerators go door-to-door in April.

Completing the census online is easy, quick and secure. Each household will be delivered a Personal Identification Number (PIN) which can be used to log on and access this year’s Census questions and submit answers. This year’s census will collect information on the number of people living in each household as well as their sex and year of birth. By participating in the census online, residents can also enter to win a tablet.

“The online option has proven to be simple, effective and efficient which is why we encourage residents to consider submitting their answers online,” said Leonie Becker, Legislative Services Project Coordinator.

Letters with instructions and PIN numbers are being hand delivered to every home in Red Deer from April 1 to 6. Residents are being asked to look in their mailbox or front door for their letter. The PIN is specific to each address and is required to enter the census website. The site can be accessed at  starting April 1. Residents can complete the census online from April 1 to 14.

“Even if residents don’t have a home computer, any device that can access the internet will work including phones and tablets,” said Becker. “If online isn’t an option, residents can call the Census office at 403-342-8317 or wait for an enumerator to visit between April 15 and May 9.”

The City conducts the annual census to obtain an official count of the number of people living in Red Deer. Census data is crucial information for City planning and to ensure The City receives the appropriate amount of grant funding from the provincial and federal governments. For 2016, The City of Red Deer is expected to receive approximately $236.34 per capita in grant funding which will be used for community projects and initiatives.
