67 Street / 30 Avenue roundabout to fully open Wednesday

(Red Deer, Alberta)

The 67 Street / 30 Avenue roundabout will fully open to traffic on Wednesday, September 28 by 9 a.m.

The intersection of Carrington Drive and 30 Avenue will re-open to traffic and the traffic signal will be operational. Motorists will once again be able to access Clearview Market and Clearview Ridge from Carrington Drive at 30 Avenue. The roadway extensions for 67 Street and 30 Avenue are now fully connected to the roundabout.

Timberlands Drive will remain closed in all directions as construction continues in the Timberlands North neighbourhood. Motorists looking to gain access to the Timberlands North subdivision are to use Thorburn Avenue or Threfall Gate off 67 Street as alternative detours. Construction on Timberlands Drive is expected to be completed by the end of October 2016.

“The completion of the roundabout is a positive step forward to reduce congestion and delays, while improving the safety of all road users,” said Wayne Gustafson, Engineering Services Manager. “This intersection improvement will accommodate increased traffic volumes which are expected as a result of development happening in the city’s northeast.”

Roundabouts are new for many Red Deer drivers, but these are the basic steps for navigating roundabouts:

  • Slow down and pick your lane.
  • As you approach, signal like you would at a regular intersection: signal left if you’re turning left, signal right if you’re turning right.
  • Yield to pedestrians at the crosswalks.
  • Look left and yield to both lanes of traffic in the roundabout; only stop if necessary.
  • Stay in your lane until your exit; lane changes are not required in roundabouts.
  • Signal right as you approach your exit and yield to pedestrians.
