Statement from Mayor Tara Veer on Mitts for Many program

(Red Deer, Alberta)

Preparing for the Canada Winter Games has brought our community together in ways we have never experienced before. The 2019 Canada Winter Games “Mitts for Many” program is an initiative to support Red Deer’s most vulnerable citizens, one I am confident will prove to be another opportunity for Red Deerians to come together to leave our community better than we found it.

Red Deer, like many communities in Alberta, has been presented with very real social challenges over the past few years and, in recent weeks; we have also been experiencing extreme cold temperatures. We are grateful for the support of our local social organizations and for all they do with and for the vulnerable citizens among us.

The City of Red Deer is excited for the opportunity to support the “Mitts for Many” program to ensure all Red Deer citizens are able to keep warm this winter and we are now asking our community to add to the “Mitts for Many” that have been brought to us by Teams from across Canada.

Our community has been transformed because of the Canada Winter Games. We are asking Red Deerians to help us ensure that the Games leave us with strong social legacies as well, in addition to the incredible sport and cultural legacies they will leave us with.

The Games are a one-in-a-generation opportunity for our community, so may we continue to work hard and bring our absolute best in all things, but may we also occasionally pause, enjoy the Games, and be reminded that we are all a part of Canadian history–in-the-making.

When we do, however, may we all bring a pair of new or gently used mittens to donate to a fellow Red Deerian in need, and join our country in leaving our community better than we found it.
