Red Deer RCMP arrest man after stolen truck hits house – Update – Charges laid

Red Deer, Alberta – Red Deer RCMP have charged an 18 year old Red Deer man with numerous Criminal Code offences after he collided with several vehicles and a townhouse on Cornett Drive yesterday while driving a stolen truck.

RCMP verified that the stolen truck was proceeding westbound on Cornett Drive when it struck a parked Dodge Ram truck and a parked Dodge Magnum car before driving onto the lawn of the townhouse and becoming stuck on the front steps. After the series of collisions, the suspect attempted to flee on foot while carrying several items, including a shotgun in an unsecured gun case and ammunition. Approximately five witnesses detained the suspect in a nearby park until police arrived.

“The RCMP appreciate citizens’ wish to help out, and are glad that no one suffered injury as a result of detaining this suspect for police,” says Corporal Karyn Kay of the Red Deer RCMP. “However, public safety is our first priority, and we encourage citizens not to put themselves in danger by engaging with suspects who may respond in unpredictable ways or who may, as was the case yesterday, be armed with a dangerous weapon.”

18 year old Dakota Lee Cornelssen faces the following charges:

  • Criminal Code 355(a) – Possession of stolen property over $5,000
  • Criminal Code 249(1)(a) – Dangerous operation of motor vehicle
  • Criminal Code 252 – Fail to stop or remain
  • Criminal Code 88(1) – Possession of weapon for dangerous purpose
  • Criminal Code 92(1) – Unauthorized possession of firearm
  • Criminal Code 145(3) – Fail to comply with recognizance X 7
  • Criminal Code 129(a) – Resists/ obstructs peace officer

Dakota Cornelssen has been remanded in custody. He will appear in Calgary Provincial Court via CCTV at 11 am on June 24.

Red Deer RCMP arrest man after stolen truck hits house

Red Deer, Alberta – Red Deer RCMP have a Red Deer man in custody after the stolen truck he was driving hit a house on Cornett Drive; as the driver attempted to flee, a number of citizens detained him until police arrived.

RCMP received a call at 12:30 pm today that a burgundy coloured Ford truck had struck a parked truck and a parked car and then a house on Cornett Drive, and that the driver was attempting to flee the scene on foot. Several witnesses detained the suspect until police arrived and took him into custody. Shortly before the collision, Red Deer RCMP had received a report that the stolen truck was seen in the area of 30 Avenue and 55 Street; as police officers searched the area for the truck, a second report came in that it had struck the Cornett Drive residence. The truck had been reported stolen out of Red Deer on June 18.

The house on Cornett Drive sustained minor damage. No one was injured in the collision.

A 20 year old Red Deer man will face Criminal Code charges as a result of today’s events. RCMP will issue an update with his name and the charges against him once the charges have been sworn before the courts.
