Regional Assessment Review Board is seeking new members

(Red Deer, Alberta)

The Central Alberta Regional Assessment Review Board is accepting applications for new members to join the board, which is responsible for issuing decisions on complaints related to property assessments in communities across central Alberta.

Twenty-three municipalities are a part of the Central Alberta Regional Assessment Review Board. The board is an impartial, independent board comprised of citizen members that hear and issue decisions on formal complaints from property owners who disagree with the assessed values of their property within the partner municipalities.

“We are looking for everyone from retired assessors and lawyers to those with an interest in property assessment but have no formal training,” said Samantha Rodwell, Deputy City Clerk. “The board’s diverse membership has been instrumental for ensuring municipalities have access to qualified, experienced and unbiased board members.”

A committee comprised of representatives from the regional member municipalities selects board members. Once selected, new members will receive training provided through Municipal Affairs and will receive remuneration for their responsibilities and time spent serving on the board.

Preference will be given to candidates with expertise on quasi-judicial boards or administrative boards, or those with an assessment, legal or valuation background. Applicants should also demonstrate the ability to consider both sides of an issue to make informed and fair decisions, and the ability to work well in small groups and communicate clearly in writing. However, applicants with no formal training or experience but have a keen interest in property assessment are also encouraged to apply. If interested, you must be available during the day for training and hearings.

To apply, send a cover letter and resume to RegionalARB@reddeer.ca. The deadline to apply is November 30, 2018.
