The City and the YMCA of Northern Alberta have successfully negotiated an agreement that will see the YMCA lease and operate the Northside Community Centre.
“This is great news for Red Deer as we official welcome the YMCA back to our community,” said Mayor Tara Veer. “The YMCA has a long, proud history of building and strengthening the communities they serve, and we look forward to working with them to realize the positive benefits of this partnership for our citizens. The Northside Community Centre is a long-awaited addition to North Red Deer, and this possibility is finally coming to reality.”
The YMCA of Northern Alberta, will lease and operate the Northside Community Centre for a five-year term. While the specific details regarding programming and fees are still being finalized, residents can expect programming that will support a thriving community and be welcoming to everyone.
“It is an immense honour to have this opportunity to serve and support Red Deer’s families and communities”, said Nick Parkinson, President and CEO of YMCA of Northern Alberta. “The YMCA of Northern Alberta looks forward to working with residents and community groups to offer programs, services, and an approach that is inclusive to all and fosters a sense of well-being within the community.”
The YMCA approached The City about establishing a presence in the community earlier this year, potentially through the operation of the Northside Community Centre. Administration pursued this operating model, which led to this agreement.
“The City and the YMCA are strongly aligned through their focus on healthy, vibrant, inclusive communities where children, adults and families can thrive,” said Shelley Gagnon, Recreation, Parks and Culture Manager. “Given this alignment – combined with YMCA’s legacy as a strong community organization, we’re confident that Red Deerians will benefit greatly from this partnership.”
