Gary W. Harris Centre for Health, Wellness & Sport
- The Gary W. Harris Centre for Health, Wellness & Sport is being built at RDC to provide a venue for athletic, recreational and community activities.
- The facility is a requirement for the 2019 Canada Winter Games being hosted in Red Deer. The centre will provide a venue for short track and squash for the games.
- This is a Red Deer College project with funding from multiple sources.
Construction began in early 2016. It is scheduled to be completed for the fall of 2018. The facility will include teaching and learning spaces, fitness and training space, an Olympic-sized ice surface, sports administration centre, outdoor athletics zone and a hall that will be used as a gathering space for staff, students, professors and community members.
Budget Requirements, Council Decision Points and Funding Sources
Through a tri-party agreement with The City of Red Deer, the Canada Winter Games Host Society and Red Deer College, a contribution will be made to the College over a 10 year period totaling $11,501,000. This contribution represents about 50 per cent of the expected costs of the Olympic sized ice surface and squash courts to be housed within this facility. Payments of $1.15 million will be paid annually from 2017 to 2026 inclusive. The grants being given to RDC for this project are funded from debt and the Canada Winter Games grant.
