In 2014, a review of Red Deer’s community and performance sports fields was completed. This review included a comprehensive user group consultation process and condition assessment of most sports fields in the city. The review identified issues such as the cluster configuration of sports fields not lending well to hosting large scale tournaments, and difficulty meeting the evolving needs of user groups. In 2014, the Community Amenities prioritization process also identified sports fields, and specifically the ability to accommodate tournaments, as a community priority. Currently, many community sports fields will require enhancements to meet this need. Enhancements may include expanding field sizes, providing additional amenities, such as fencing, and/or changing field standards for both turf and shale surfaces.
The next major upgrade will be at the West Park Middle School Fields, which is shown in a separate multi-year capital sheet. This capital sheet shows a placeholder in 2021 for additional sports field upgrades at different sites based on the anticipated future needs of local sports organizations.
