Year of the Garden Activities and Events

We are working with our community partners to provide a list of all things "Year of the Garden". 

There are many ways to celebrate the Year of the Garden, including different activities, events and tutorials. We encourage you to browse through each upcoming month to see what is being offered and to click on the event link to learn more. The activities and events monthly lists will be updated regularly so check back often for updates. 

What's happening?

  • June 4 - participate in the Red Deer River Cleanup at Kerry Wood Nature Centre 
  • June 6 - World Green Roof Day - join in the celebration of green roofs all over the world and the many benefits they bring to people and nature
  • June 11- The Ugly Spudling: A Tater Story - start the conversation surrounding the reduction of food waste with this engaging program for families with young children at Kerry Wood Nature Centre 
  • June 11 - Parkland Garden Centre presents a course on Edible Fruit Trees & Shrubs for Central Alberta
  • June 11-19 - celebrate the Year of the Garden during Garden Days 
  • June 18 - celebrate National Garden Day at Red Deer Public Library's Dawe Patio Garden. Join us at the Dawe Branch to celebrate Garden Days and the annual opening of our Friends of the Library Reading Garden! Learn what we planted this year in the garden, make a garden gnome and pick a gardening book from the library. All visitors will be entered into the draw for prizes. 
  • June 20 - 26 - take part in Pollinator Week
  • August 13-14 - Alberta Open Farm Days gives Albertans a backstage pass to meet local farmers, taste local foods direct from the producer, experience the farm and understand where their food comes from
  • Understand how and why Water Conservation is important
  • Learn about Stormwater Ponds in Red Deer

  • Storing and preserving your garden goods
  • Jam & Jelly Making Workshop and Pickling Workshop at Fort Normandeau
  • Harvest Moon Walk at Kerry Wood Nature Centre - September 10
  • Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup - September 24
  • Think about watering in and protecting your trees
  • Learn about mulching and insulating
  • Consider indoor growing to keep the Year of the Garden growing all year round!
