September 13, 2019 10:12 AM

Red Deer, Alta. - In an effort to curb criminal activity in the downtown area, Red Deer RCMP conducted targeted enforcement efforts over the summer, in addition to the day-to-day policing that takes place in the area.

“Downtown is a priority area in the RCMP’s Annual Policing Plan,” said Staff Sergeant Jeff McBeth, Acting Operations Office for the Red Deer Detachment. “By establishing target-based enforcement in the Downtown, our officers were able to make inroads into reducing crime in the downtown.”

Several units, including General Duty, the Downtown Unit, Traffic, and Community Peace Officers, participated in the operation. As a result of this coordinated effort, officers were able to make 214 arrests, lay 422 criminal charges, execute 364 warrants, recover 31 stolen vehicles, issue 547 Provincial tickets, and respond to 6 by-law offences, all within 1337 patrol hours dedicated to the operation.

“The success in Red Deer’s downtown over the summer is a result of a strategic, targeted focus, and the dedication of our officers to the community,” said S/Sgt. McBeth. “We are committed to ensuring the downtown remains one of our top priorities and our continued efforts will ensure that it is safe and enjoyable for everyone.”
