Red Deer RCMP remind you to protect your parcels from theft

January 11, 2022 2:39 PM

Red Deer, Alta. – As online shopping packages arrive this holiday season, Red Deer RCMP would like to remind Red Deerians to take measures to prevent being targeted by parcel thieves.

This time of year, parcel thefts from porches and mailboxes increase. Here are some tips to avoid being the victim of theft:

  • Track your packages online and plan to be home when packages are supposed to arrive, or arrange for an alternate pickup option.
  • When possible, opt for a “signature required” delivery.
  • Check your mail every day. If you plan to be away, have a trusted neighbour or friend check your mail.
  • Consider installing surveillance cameras, and post signs that they are on the property.

If you have a security camera, they can be registered on the Red Deer RCMP’s CAPTURE program by visiting www.reddeercapture.ca. This program is available to both residents and businesses. When you register your camera, you take an active role in deterring crime and assisting in the RCMP’s overall crime prevention goals in the community.

The Red Deer RCMP encourage the public to report any criminal or suspicious activity to police. If you are a victim of theft and the item is valued under $5,000, you can report the theft using the online crime reporting tool at www.reddeer.ca/RCMP or by calling 403-343-5575. If you see a crime in progress, please dial 911.

If you wish to remain anonymous, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the P3 Tips app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.
