Red Deer Lights the Night

This year, Red Deer Lights the Night means not just lighting up one night, but many. Starting November 19, explore the greater downtown to discover festive lights, beautiful holiday decorations and activities to enjoy throughout the Christmas season. Visit City Hall Park, Ross Street Patio and Capstone to find festive fun waiting for all to enjoy.

Christmas light displays at City Hall Park, Ross Street Patio and Capstone
Starts November 19

Visit downtown any evening to enjoy the beautiful light display Red Deerians have come to love. Lights are turned on from sunset to sunrise and remain in place through mid-January. 

Please note that dogs are not permitted in City Hall Park.

Christmas Craft Drive-Thru
December 4

Pick up all the supplies for a festive craft to make at home, courtesy of Family Services of Central Alberta and The City of Red Deer (while supplies last).

Kindness Tree
Starts December 8

Local students have helped us decorate some wood ornaments that will be placed on a few trees in Capstone. Starting December 8, we invite you to come down to Canada 150 Square to see the ornaments and, if you see one you like, feel free to take it home to hang on your tree!

Late Night Shopping - Capstone and Downtown Red Deer
Thursday, December 9

Participating Downtown and Capstone businesses will remain open until 8 p.m. or later for holiday shopping.


Most participants have special offers and many serve up hot drinks or holiday treats, so it’s a great time to enjoy some Christmas cheer.


Shoppers can visit Dose Coffee to receive a complimentary small hot chocolate or coffee (first 100 shoppers). Many retailers will be distributing coupons for a complimentary Troubled Monk craft soda. 

In Capstone, you can enter to win one of two prize baskets, featuring items from Capstone retailers (no purchase necessary).

  • Red Deer Lights the Night Trivia – Take your best shot at guessing some festive trivia questions for a chance to score a pair of tickets to a 2022 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships game* in Red Deer.
  • Red Deer Lights the Night Photo Challenge – Share your photos of the downtown lights and decorations on social media and tag The City with #rdlights for a chance to win a prize.
  • Santa’s Bus Tour Photo Challenge – Snap a pic of Santa’s Bus Tour driving by and tag The City of Red Deer on social media with #rdlights for a chance to win a prize.
  • Best in Snow at Capstone – November 20-27 - Dress your pet in their best Christmas or winter wear, and bring them to the Common Ground Garden Project site at 5581 45 Street in Capstone, where you can take a photo in our holiday-themed vignette! Tag @liveincapstone for your chance to win one of three prize baskets, featuring items from Capstone retailers and treats for your pet!
  • SHOP Downtown contest – December 1 – 22 – Visit for details on how you could win one of five prize packs valued at $400 from the Downtown Business Association and Kraze 101.3 FM.
  • Downtown Scavenger Hunt – through January 8 – Visit for details.
  • Neighbourhood decorating contests - Many community associations are hosting holiday decorating contests in December. Check with your neighbourhood's association to learn more and get involved. And, be sure to explore your neighbourhood to discover the Christmas cheer nearby! Special thanks to Pearson's Berry Farm, Country Cupboard and Peavey Mart for help with the prizes.

*Note, according to Hockey Canada’s COVID-19 Vaccination Policy, valid proof of full COVID-19 vaccination at least 14 days in advance of attendance is required to gain access to games and related events at the Peavy Mart Centrium and Rogers Place. Rapid testing will not be accepted.

Santa’s Bus Tour

Santa Claus and his Number 1 Elf will cruise through town on a Red Deer Transit bus to bring Christmas cheer to Red Deer neighbourhoods.

We’ve done our best to help Santa visit each neighbourhood in the city, but due to his busy schedule he cannot visit every street. Please choose the route closest to your home to catch a glimpse of the jolly man and his crew.

World Junior skate day at Bower Ponds
