Cause of power outages determined

(Red Deer, Alberta)

The cause of two power outages in several neighbourhoods in northeast Red Deer has been determined.

On November 7, 2019, at approximately 3:30 p.m., an estimated 1,500 customers lost power in neighbourhoods on the northeast side of Red Deer. Within 20 minutes, power was restored to approximately two thirds of these customers.

As they were investigating the source of the outage, EL&P crews located a piece of equipment that had failed in the area of Parkland Mall. With the source located, crews were able to restore power to the remaining customers, with the exception of Walmart and a nearby apartment building, by 5 p.m. Once the equipment was replaced, the remaining two customers had their power restored by 7:20 p.m.

On November 8, 2019, at 11:30 a.m., a brief outage lasting approximately 30 minutes occurred, affecting the same areas. Crews continue to investigate, but it appears to be related to an underground cable feeding the piece of equipment that was replaced. Crews have made a further repair and will continue to monitor and test the equipment.
