Downtown parking fees reinstated in phased approach

(Red Deer, Alberta)

Parking fees will be reinstated in a phased manner starting June 22 after The City made modifications to parking operations during the initial stages of its municipal response to COVID-19.

Now that businesses are starting to resume operations in the downtown area, The City will begin to reinstate fees and enforcement in a phased approach and in alignment with the Phase 2 of the provincial relaunch.

The initial modifications made to parking operations included the removal of the requirement of fees and payment for on-street and off-street parking, and enforcement.

At this time, reinstatement of parking and fees will happen as follows:

  • Payment required for on-street meters as of June 22
  • City lots continue to be offered for free until July 31
  • Monthly parking continued to be offered for free until July 31
  • Sorensen Station parkade would continue to be closed until July 31

Enforcement will occur in alignment with these dates.

“We were pleased to have been able to suspend fees in the downtown and provide some relief to visitors and staff in the area during the initial phases of COVID-19. As the downtown starts to open up and businesses resume operations, it is in the best interest to begin reinstating fees for not only financial reasons, but to ensure parking is available to visitors who need it,” says Erin Stuart, Inspections & Licensing Manager. “Our approach balances the needs for those that may have returned to work in the downtown, with those businesses that wish to provide parking for their customers.”

Monthly parking will be reinstated, along with payment in lots, at a later date, when more of the offices resume working from the downtown.
