Early morning fire in downtown Red Deer

Red Deer Emergency Services responded to a major structure fire this morning at 4909 48 Street.

Crews were dispatched to the building, known as the Empire Building, at approximately 5:30 a.m. They found a fully involved structure fire and called for additional units. Mutual aid was also received from Red Deer County, and Red Deer RCMP provided support on scene.  

The fire has been extinguished, but crews remain on scene to monitor hot spots. 48 Street between 49 Avenue and 50 Avenue remains closed, and will likely be closed for much of the day.

The Empire Building is home to several businesses and offices, many of which suffered damage in the fire. The full extent of the damage is still being determined at this time. No injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

At this time, the cause of the fire also remains under investigation.
