Get growing with Home Grown garden starter kits

Red Deerians can hone their green thumb with new Home Grown garden starter kits. The City is making 250 kits available to residents in an effort to encourage gardening at home.

“We know people are anxious to find ways to enjoy the outdoors during these times,” said Karen Mann, Emergency Operations Centre Director. “These kits are a great option for people looking to start a garden, but don’t have the necessary supplies, or who may not have gardened before.”

Each kit contains a small planter, potting soil and three seed packs (e.g., lettuce, chives, radishes, spinach). Instructions for getting started will be included, and registrants will also have access to tutorials and videos from local experts.

Kits are given away on a first-come, first-served basis. Online registration for the kits will continue until all kits are assigned.

“Gardening is a great way to stay physically and mentally active,” said Mann. “But this program will also build community and foster community connections. Throughout the season, we will be encouraging participants to share their gardening experiences – the good and bad – on social media. There will also be opportunities to learn from experts in the field, and from each other.”

Kits will be available for curbside pick-up by registered participants later this week. Procedures will be in place to ensure contactless pick-up, and delivery options are available for those who aren’t able to pick up in person.

Participants are invited to share their gardening experiences on social media using #HomeGrownRedDeer.
