Cart pilot project and city wide roll out to be considered by Council

(Red Deer, Alberta)

On Monday, Council will consider rolling out Green Carts to Red Deer residents starting early next year. If approved, Blue and Black Carts will follow in spring of 2019.

A cart family pilot program has been taking place in Red Deer since 2015. The 2,000 pilot households received Green Carts for organic waste in 2015 followed by Blue Carts for recycling and Black Carts for garbage in 2016.

The cart family project is part of a long-term plan to reduce waste and associated greenhouse gas emissions through a sustainable residential waste collection system. The introduction of an automated cart system was outlined as one of many waste diversion strategies in The City’s Waste Management Master Plan.

The pilot households played a crucial role in helping understand what works for this program, and what didn’t. On Monday, Council will consider a report on the success of the pilot project, and a plan for city-wide implementation.
