With a growing number of options for transportation and vehicles for hire in Red Deer and central Alberta, The City wants citizens to help steer what rules and regulations should be in place when it updates its Taxi Bylaw and Limousine and Sedan Bylaws this year.
Right now, The City of Red Deer’s bylaws regulate taxis, limousines and sedans. “We know things are changing,” said Erin Stuart, Manager of Inspections & Licensing. “Taxis, limousines and sedans are now just some of the vehicles for hire in our city, and we need to ensure we have the right regulations in place as the industry continues to evolve.”
An online survey is one of the tools being used to gauge people’s needs and feedback about vehicles for hire in Red Deer and central Alberta. The survey is available at reddeer.ca/surveys starting today; it will run until September 7, 2017.
Regional residents are also invited to participate in the survey as a regional approach to vehicles for hire is being considered in an effort to ensure consistent regulations from municipality to municipality. However, some municipalities have not yet decided whether they want to explore a regional model.
At this time, the Town of Blackfalds, Town of Sylvan Lake, City of Lacombe, Town of Penhold, and Red Deer County have passed resolutions to explore a regional vehicle for hire approach. City Councils in the Town of Innisfail and Lacombe County are also expected to consider resolutions that may see them explore a regional approach.
“While we can learn from cities like Edmonton and Calgary who are already exploring how best to respond to and address vehicles for hire in their cities; it is important that we ensure we are doing the right thing for citizens in Red Deer and central Alberta. This survey is just the first step in a multi-step consultation process that will help us and some of the neighbouring municipalities determine if, who and what rules and regulations should be in place for vehicles for hire in our city and potentially the region,” said Stuart.
Red Deer City Council passed a resolution to explore the regional Vehicle for Hire approach on Monday, July 24, 2017.
