Section of Great Chief Park closed to public on Thursday

(Red Deer, Alberta)

A section of Great Chief Park will be closed to the public on Thursday while work is happening as part of the Great Chief Park Enhancement Project.

The area of the park near the west parking lot, including the entrance road, will be closed from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Thursday, March 16, with barricades in place. The closure will accommodate tree removal near the west parking lot, which will allow for the creation of two new entrances to improve traffic flow and safety once the enhancements are completed later this year.

On Friday, March 17, this area will re-open, however the road leading into Great Chief Park will have intermittent lane closures and the west parking lot will remain closed until Saturday, March 18. Park users will be directed to park in the north parking lot.

Work as part of the Great Chief Park Enhancement Project, includes:

  • Constructing a new synthetic sports field and a 400 metre speed skating oval.
  • Constructing a new field house/pavilion which will include a concession, public washrooms, change rooms, meeting space, timekeeper and a media area.
  • Constructing a new maintenance building.
  • Upgrading electrical services.
  • Reconfiguring the parking area.
