This weekend, work is scheduled to begin on the River Bend Trail Enhancement Project, resulting in some temporary trail closures.

The River Bend Trail Enhancement Project involves widening 5.5 kilometers of the existing 15 kilometers of trail, upgrading the biathlon range and building a stadium area. River Bend will be a host venue for cross country and biathlon during the 2019 Canada Winter Games and these upgrades are required to meet the necessary technical requirements.

"This project marks another milestone as our City gets ready to welcome visitors and athletes to Red Deer in 2019," said Curtis Martinek, Projects Superintendent. “These enhancements to River Bend will result in a lasting recreational legacy for citizens as the trails will better accommodate multi-use for decades to come.”

Starting Saturday, March 11, the upper trails of River Bend will close for approximately three to four weeks while widening work is underway. The lower trails, including the perimeter trail, trails around the driving range and through the golf course will remain open until the end of the cross country season. There will be additional trail closures with signage posted to direct trail users until the project is completed in Fall 2017.
The River Bend Golf and Recreation Area is a node of the Waskasoo Park System that is designated specifically for recreational development. There will be tree removal along portions of the 5.5 km of trail being widened. Some of the fallen trees will be used to support the new trail enhancements through providing bank stabilization and grading materials.
