Green Cart survey starting this week

(Red Deer, Alberta)

This month, The City of Red Deer will be peeking into your Green Cart, but don’t be alarmed; it’s for a good cause.

Green Cart pick up started in April of this year, and since then, the amount of garbage collected from households in Red Deer has been substantially reduced. This survey will let staff catch people doing the right things so we can let them know they are on the right track, and answer questions and correct placement and content errors for others.

“Now that residents have been using Green Carts for a few months, we decided to hit the streets and give out gold stars to households who are doing everything right,” said Janet Whitesell, Waste Management Superintendent. “We will also take the opportunity to provide feedback and education to households that might still be working though the learning curve on using their cart.”

The City will also be collecting data to evaluate exactly how residents are using Green Carts. Residents are encouraged to ask questions to staff if they see them – they will be visiting about 10 per cent of Red Deer households over a four week period, so some homes may not see them in their area.

“We want to ensure residents have everything they need to successfully use their Green Cart,” said Whitesell. “We are very impressed with how households have embraced the Green Cart so far this year, and are excited to continue supporting households who are still working to come on board.”

Diverting compostable waste into the Green Cart reduces the amount of garbage disposed in the landfill, and works toward the next phase of the program: Blue Carts in replacement of the current blue box program and Black Carts for remaining garbage. This next phase of the cart program will be rolling out in the spring 2019.

Residents are encouraged to visit www.reddeer.ca/carts for all the nitty gritty on using their Green Cart, or email carts@reddeer.ca or call 403-340-BLUE (2583) for more information.
