Residents can expect to receive text, email and phone call alerts on Friday as The City runs a test of their emergency notification system, Notify Red Deer.

The Notify Red Deer test is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Friday, May 11 and will send alerts to all registered users, as well as everyone listed in the phone book.

The system test falls at the end of Emergency Preparedness Week, following the Federal Government's test of Alert Ready, which sent alerts by television, radio, and, for the first time, to compatible wireless devices across the province this afternoon.

“In an emergency, information is the most valuable resource anyone can have,” said Karen Mann, Emergency Management Coordinator, “Knowing that your information is reliable and accurate will give you piece of mind and help you take the right steps to respond.”

The City will continue to use Notify Red Deer to alert residents in an emergency, but will also make use of the Federal Government's Alert Ready system as well as the Alberta Emergency Alerts mobile app if the situation warrants.

"We are fortunate to have three separate systems to rely on in the case of an emergency. Each system reaches the public in different ways, which allows us to reach as many people as possible, as quickly as possible in an emergency," said Julia Harvie-Shemko, Director of Communications and Strategic Planning,

Notify Red Deer sends alerts to registered users by way of text, email and phone call, and also makes a phone call to all numbers listed in the phone book. Alberta Emergency Alerts, the provincial alert system, sends alerts to mobile app users and connects to Alert Ready, which sends alerts to television, radio and compatible wireless devices.

"We will use every available tool to reach people in an emergency," said Harvie-Shemko.

Residents are encouraged to sign up for Notify Red Deer or to log in and update their account to ensure they can be reached in an emergency.
