Council approves pricing structure for cart collection

(Red Deer, Alberta)

Residents will be able to customize their blue and black cart collection system to meet their household waste needs and also influence their utility rates, as approved during second and final reading of the Utility Bylaw amendment (3606/2018) tonight.

Currently, residents are charged a flat rate of $21.72, which covers garbage, green cart and blue box on their utility bills. This rate is proposed to increase to $22.25 in March, due to normal inflationary increases. The rate adjustments work out to an approximate $4 decrease for residents who choose the smallest black cart (changing from $22.25 to $18.25), an approximate $6 increase for residents who choose the extra-large black cart (changing from $22.25 to $28.25). A medium black cart would remain at the inflationary cost of $22.25.

The size of blue cart chosen has no impact on utility rates. Inflationary rate adjustments would take place in March 2019 and the two different rate adjustments based upon cart size would take place in May.

Residents will receive a package in the mail from The City in the coming days outlining ways they can choose their cart sizes, and by when. There will be options for selection including online, mail and by phone.

Blue and black carts will be delivered to residents starting in March of 2019, with collection beginning in May. Residents are reminded that garbage, recycling and green cart collection will continue as usual until that time. More information about blue and black carts and collection schedule will be provided when the new carts are delivered, and can also be found at www.reddeer.ca/carts.
