Front counter services being centralized at Red Deer RCMP downtown detachment

May 17, 2019 10:28 AM
(Red Deer, Alberta)

Effective June 3, front counter customer service will no longer be available at the RCMP north detachment. All front counter customer services will be available to citizens at the downtown detachment.

The north detachment will remain open and RCMP members will continue to work from the detachment providing policing services to the community. The Red Deer Emergency Services station will also remain open.

“The decision to centralize customer service at the downtown detachment was made during the 2019 budget deliberations as a cost savings measure,” said Paul Goranson, Director of Protective Services. “The north detachment front counter sees relatively low volume compared to the downtown detachment, and services are limited.”

During the 2019 operating budget debate, City Council approved approximately $3.5 million in corporate costs savings, revenues and efficiencies. The closure of customer service counter at the north detachment was approved as one of these cost saving measures, and will result in the elimination of two staff positions.

“We recognize this is difficult for staff, especially those directly affected,” said Goranson. “We’re working very closely with staff, providing support to help them manage during this transition.”

The final day of operation for the front counter at the north detachment is May 31.

The front counter at the downtown detachment is open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. (closed 12 p.m. - 12:30 p.m. for lunch). Services available include:

  • Accident reporting
  • Criminal background checks
  • Reporting past crimes
  • Requests for victim services support
  • Non-criminal fingerprinting (specific hours)
