Free Yard Waste Week for the whole month of May

April 28, 2020 2:22 PM
(Red Deer, Alberta)

Free Yard Waste Week will be Free Yard Waste Month this year from May 4 to May 30.

This is an opportunity for residents to drop yard waste off at the Waste Management Facility without the usual tipping fees associated with the disposal. It typically happens twice each year, once in the spring and once on the fall, for a one-week timeframe.

The intent of the extension is to provide ample opportunity for all residents wishing to participate in the program to do so, while observing recommendations from Alberta Health that include limiting trips to essential visits. There is also increased traffic at the Waste Management Facility while physical distancing recommendations are in effect.

Residents are reminded that they can use their green carts for the yard waste generated during spring yard clean-up. Once the green cart is full, extra yard waste can be set out for collection, by placing it in a paper yard waste bag, loose in a garbage can or by bundling small branches and tying with string. Guidelines for yard waste set out are on The City’s website: https://www.reddeer.ca/city-services/garbage-recycling--organics/green-cart/yard-waste/.

“We want residents to understand there is plenty of time to visit the facility, and there is no need to rush to fit it into one week,” said Tim Ainscough, Environmental Services Manager. “We’re also encouraging customers to utilize their green carts and yard waste bins to dispose of yard waste and to avoid any unnecessary trips to the Waste Management Facility.”

Those who wish to drop off materials at the Waste Management Facility are asked to keep the following in mind:

  • Starting Wednesday, April 29, accepted forms of payment include debit, personal credit card (for residential accounts only), cheque and, for commercial customers, pre-approved accounts.
  • Follow AHS guidelines and limit all trips to essential visits.
  • Do not visit if you are sick or self-isolating.
  • There will likely be longer than usual wait times due to measures that are in place to protect staff and customers. Please be patient and respectful to staff and others.
  • Follow physical distancing guidelines and remain 2 metres away from others while on site

More information about the Waste Management Facility, including hours of operation and tipping fees, can be found on The City’s website: https://www.reddeer.ca/city-services/garbage-recycling--organics/waste-management-facility-landfill/.
