A major rehabilitation project to repair multiple elements of the culvert at Piper Creek and 32 Street is nearing completion. Repair of the in-water wing walls will wrap up in February with seasonal work including painting, landscaping, and asphalt paving occurring in the spring.
On December 16, the Devonian Trail passing under 32 Street will re-open to the public. Trail users should expect active construction occurring beside the trail. Additional intermittent trail closures are expected through June 2021 to facilitate the remaining work. During these closures, users will be redirected to the temporary detour that has been in place since the start of construction.
The structure is 58 years old and had multiple elements showing signs of deterioration. This project repaired deteriorated elements ensuring the structure reaches a 100-year life. In addition, changes were made to the structure to improve sightlines and congestion points for trail users. The work included reconstruction of the wing walls, pathway improvements, concrete repair and replacing the handrails.
Drivers are reminded to slow down when driving in construction zones and obey all signs. Pedestrians are reminded to cross only at designated crosswalks.
All construction is weather dependent and schedules may be subject to change. For information about construction and closures visit www.reddeer.ca/roadclosures. Any impacts to transit routes are posted on the City website as construction nears and can be viewed at www.reddeer.ca/transitdisruptions.
