(Red Deer, Alberta)

"Community safety has been identified as the number one priority of our citizens and will continue to be the top priority for City Council and The City of Red Deer. Today’s announcement by the Government of Alberta responds to a critical need in our community. This provincial investment reflects that the safety and health of all members of our community is of primary importance.

The City of Red Deer welcomes the news that the Government of Alberta has selected our city for a drug treatment court. With the significant public safety and health issues our community and region are facing, this will help to break the systemic cycle of addiction and crime as a much needed alternative legal mechanism, as well as alleviate backlog pressures currently facing our justice system locally. Additional capacity in the local justice system will also help support the interests of victims of crime.

On behalf of Red Deer City Council, The City of Red Deer, and, above all, the citizens we serve, thank you to the Provincial Government for bringing this justice initiative and addictions response service to Red Deer. We look forward to the establishment of this court, the critical investments to our local law enforcement objectives, and the public safety and health improvements it will no doubt make for our community as a whole.

I am proud of the citizens of Red Deer and Central Alberta, local leaders and elected officials across the province who identified a need and are working to improve the justice system for communities like Red Deer. I have no doubt it will make a substantial improvement to the lives of many Albertans in Central Alberta.”
