Red Deer RCMP and Community Peace Officers are reminding drivers to follow the posted speed limit at all times, after a vehicle was recorded travelling more than three times the legal speed limit in a playground zone.

“There is absolutely no need or acceptable reason to be traveling at that speed in a residential area, let alone in a posted playground zone,” says Jonathon Matula, Community Peace Officer with The City of Red Deer. “There are plenty of kids and families who are using our playgrounds and parks and this reckless behaviour could easily have resulted in serious injury or death.”

On June 4, the vehicle was recorded travelling 101 km/hr inside a posted 30 km/hr. playground zone on 57 Avenue near Watson Street in West Park. The adult male driver was charged with speeding in a playground zone under the Traffic Safety Act and given a mandatory court date in October.

Drivers are reminded playground zones are in effect in Red Deer from 8 a.m. – 9 p.m., seven days a week. The speed limit in all residential neighbourhoods is 50 km/hr. unless otherwise posted.
