City exploring options for revised payments related to utilities

The City of Red Deer is exploring options for revised payments related to utilities.

In response to today’s announcement from the Premier of Alberta, we are currently working on changes to our utility policies to provide financial relief to families and businesses during this time. The Premier has called on municipalities to provide utility payment options for local citizens.

“We recognize the challenges our citizens may have, not only as it relates to difficulty with utility payments at a time when there are significant economic impacts stemming from COVID-19, but also that shifting city services online may result in late payments as we limit access to places like City Hall,” said Mayor Tara Veer. “We know citizens are concerned about the long-term economic impacts of the pandemic, and we are working locally to understand how the stimulus funding packages announced by the federal and provincial governments in recent days will impact and hopefully benefit the people of our community.”

As announced yesterday, public access at City of Red Deer facilities was restricted, with a shift to online and telephone customer service. City Hall remains open, but public access is restricted to the first floor. Residents are encouraged to do business with The City online or by phone as much as possible. “We continue to monitor this ever-evolving situation, and through the Emergency Operations Centre we are making changes and modifications to City operations and policies regularly,” said Karen Mann, Emergency Management Coordinator. “We know these changes continue to have significant impacts on citizens, and we thank everyone for their support and understanding as we work to protect our community.”
