Recommendations for Westerner released

(Red Deer, Alberta)

On Monday, City Council will receive a presentation on how the Westerner Exhibition Association (WEA) can move forward. Deloitte, a third party consulting firm is set to present its financial sustainability report inclusive of the WEA’s financial capabilities and recommendations for the future state of the association.

The Deloitte review found that, while Westerner is a significant contributor to Red Deer’s economy, the current financial situation is not sustainable and there is an urgent need to modernize operations. The team at Deloitte highlighted 35 opportunities for the Westerner to modernize and become a more efficient, performance-driven organization.

These 35 opportunities are reflective of the desired outcomes set by The City prior to Deloitte developing the plan:

  • Assesses the current financial condition of the Association;
  • Describe the optional operational approach for managing the facility;
  • Detail any changes to internal control activities; and
  • Consider the greatest community benefit.

“The Westerner has a significant community and economic impact on Red Deer, so it is mutually beneficial for The City to continue to work alongside the Westerner as they work to become financially sustainable,” said Allan Seabrooke, City Manager. “The City will work on modernizing our agreements with the Westerner to ensure they accurately reflect the governance structure, financial controls and what Council wants the relationship to look like between The City and the Association.”

Following the Deloitte presentation, representatives from Westerner Park will give Council an update on what changes they have made and how they plan to move forward with the recommendations.

The Special Council Meeting on Monday, November 2 will begin at 1 p.m. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Council meetings continue to be virtual. To watch the meeting, visit meeting.reddeer.ca.
