Red Deer RCMP ticket 111 speeders in School and Playground Zones

September 9, 2019 11:00 AM

Red Deer, Alta. – In the first week of school, Red Deer RCMP Traffic Services issued 154 tickets, including 111 for speeding, as part of their annual back to school safety blitz.

“Speeding is a serious safety issue in Red Deer every day of the year, and these numbers really demonstrate that,” says Sergeant Mike Zufferli with the Red Deer RCMP Traffic Unit. “The RCMP presence around schools is a reminder to drivers to follow posted speed limits and pay attention to the road, and we’re actively targeting speeders and distracted drivers.

During the back to school traffic campaign, Red Deer RCMP also ticketed two distracted drivers who were using cell phones, one driver for failing for yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, one learner driver driving without a supervisor, and one driver for passing a vehicle in a school zone. They also issued four seatbelt violations.

Red Deer RCMP urge drivers to slow down in school and playground zones and urge students to use crosswalks and traffic control devices when crossing streets. Police encourage parents to coach their kids about traffic and pedestrian safety. Most importantly, pedestrians and drivers alike need to stay off mobile devices.

RCMP monitor school and playground zones and conduct traffic campaigns year-round throughout the community as part of The City of Red Deer and Red Deer RCMP’s collaborative focus on safer roads.
