Description
Studio paintings often begin after driving around Central Alberta, absorbing landscapes, and images of rolling hills of mixed aspen forests, patterns of fields, and rivers and creeks that meander through valleys. In July of 2022, I found myself heading towards the river travelling east on Highway 597 and had to pull over as I saw the distant rolling hills and a single field of canola in bloom sitting where the deep forest of the escarpment ended and flattened. I knew the Red Deer River was below me, but I had no access, so I based most of this painting on memory. This is often the case, and it frees me to focus on composition, interesting vantage points, shapes and forms that are revealed by colours and contrasts.
