Youth in Facilities (YIF) Project

Youth in FacilitiesThe Youth in facilities project is a partnership between the City of Red Deer and the YMCA to develop positive relationships with youth in the Collicutt Centre and the G.H. Dawe Community Centre. On-site youth workers will provide preventative and intervention initiatives to support prosocial behaviors among youth in these facilities and in the community. Through relationship building, the goal will be to offer the recreation centres as a safe and positive space, connect and refer youth to available resources, and to support skill building for youth for lifelong well-being.

  1. Who is the target audience for this program?
Children and youth ages 8-17. Youth in facilities workers anticipate serving children on the younger end of that range at the G.H Dawe Community Centre, and the slightly older range at the Collicutt Centre.

  2. What will the YIF workers provide on-site?
YIF workers will provide connections to youth in facilities who may benefit from accessing community programs and supports.

They may refer youth to programs and organizations that would benefit the youth such as Youth HQ, Red Deer Native Friendship Society as well as the YMCA Youth Drop-jn Program that offers free meals on Fridays and the opportunity to enjoy a free safe space.

The primary focus areas are food, security, safety and well-being.

  3. Where is the program administered?
The Collicutt Centre and the G.H. Dawe Community Centre will have access to supportive staff from the YMCA.

  4. Where will the YIF workers be set up in facilities?
YIF workers will primarily be visible in common areas at the G.H Dawe Community Centre (Mallway) and the Collicutt Centre (Mainstreet) as well as the gymnasium and field house. They will have limited exposure to the fitness areas and will not be in the aquatics spaces.

  5. Are YIF workers, City of Red Deer staff?
No. YIF workers are a contracted position, their role in the facility is to connect with youth in the G.H Dawe Community Centre and the Collicutt Centre. They will be visible in their YMCA uniforms.

  6. Who do I contact if I have questions about the YIF project?
    Email: recreation@reddeer.ca or call 403-309-8411.
