Building Safer Communities Fund
The City of Red Deer was approved for multi-year funding through to 2025/26 to develop a community-driven approach for the implementation of prevention and intervention strategies for at-risk and high-risk youth. Built on the success of Red Deer’s Community Safety Strategy, the BSCF funding supports initiatives that address risk factors associated with gun and gang violence.
Reducing Involvement of Red Deer Youth in Crime – Three-Year Plan
The Reducing Involvement of Red Deer Youth in Crime three-year plan was developed in collaboration with local system leaders. It prioritized five areas of local program need to help guide the selection of projects for funding.
Funding was made available for up to two years for program priorities established by the Community Integration Team (CIT) and Systems Leadership Team (SLT).
- Outreach based programs
- Specialized outreach programs for youth experiencing FASD and Pervasive Developmental Disorders
2024-2026 BSCF Funded Projects:
Youth in Facilities (YIF) – YMCA in partnership with the City of Red Deer
Launched in April 2024, delivered through YMCA Youth Mentors at the Collicutt and GH Dawe Recreation Centre, YIF program staff increase positive interactions with youth (ages 8-17) by offering wellness and skill-building activities. Youth mentors also help create a safe environment by fostering relationships and providing youth with referrals to community agencies for additional support, as needed.
Redirect - McMan Youth, Family & Community Services
The Redirect Program supports families of children and youth with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) and Pervasive Developmental Disorders (PDD) who are engaging in and/or being exposed to high-risk criminal behavior. Using a strength-based, client-centered approach, the program builds relationships with youth and their families and offers intake and goal setting support, positive community connection and engagement opportunities, tailored family outreach support, and the Connect educational program.
