19 Street Improvements Project wrapping up

Following two summer construction seasons, one of Red Deer’s busiest arterial roadways is safer, provides better mobility and can handle the capacity of the traffic that utilizes it daily.

The 19 Street Improvements Project included the complete rehabilitation of the roadway between Gaetz Avenue and Irwin Avenue on 19 Street, the extension of Red Deer’s south trail system, and the completion of a multi-lane roundabout at the intersection of 19 Street and 40 Avenue.

“There were constant potholes, limited pedestrian access to businesses and the intersection was the site of many collisions as speeds were high and patience was short,” said Christine Villeneuve, Project manager for The City of Red Deer. “The new roadway, trail system and roundabout will address all of these concerns, and we are proud to reach the end of this project on time and within the allotted budget.”

Crews will remain on site to complete the finishing touches of the project, but this marks the end of major traffic impacts. There may be occasional lane closures over the next two weeks, but they will be short in duration and not during peak traffic times.

“We want to thank everyone for their patience as we completed this necessary work,” said Villeneuve. “We know it wasn’t easy living, working and commuting through construction, but we also know traveling through the area is now safer and easier.”
