Construction on Gaetz Avenue bridge begins February 16

(Red Deer, Alberta)

Motorists are advised of an upcoming construction project on Gaetz Avenue that will require rotating road closures as well as impact parking and transit service between 45 Street and 43 Street.

Construction is scheduled to begin February 16 and is expected to be completed by the end of November 2026. This work is required to replace aging infrastructure and improve the safety and reliability of the Gaetz Avenue bridge crossing at Waskasoo Creek.

Beginning February 16, motorists should expect traffic disruptions and minor delays, with two travel lanes closed at a time. On-street parking and the transit stop between 45 Street and 43 Street of Gaetz Avenue will be closed for the duration of construction; however, access to local businesses will be maintained throughout the project.  Detours and alternative access routes will be in place as needed, and signage will be posted to help guide drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Work includes replacement of the deteriorated concrete bridge culvert originally constructed in 1912 and widened in 1957, replacement of aging underground water, sanitary, and storm lines, replacement of streetlights, and reconstruction of the Gaetz Avenue roadway surface. To safely complete the work, some tree clearing will also be required around the bridge and along a portion of Waskasoo Creek. A full closure of Gaetz Avenue is planned for approximately three weeks in April to allow for demolition and installation of a temporary bridge.

Drivers are reminded to slow down in construction areas and to follow signage. Thank you for your patience while this infrastructure work is completed. Updates will be shared as construction progresses.
