Red Deerians are invited to learn about lithium-ion battery safety as the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)’s annual Fire Prevention Week gets underway. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., RDES will be hosting an open house at Station 3, located at 100 Lees Street. This family-friendly event will include emergency vehicle tours, home fire safety and emergency planning education, and a free barbecue lunch.

The theme this year is “Charge into fire safety!”, focusing on educating people about the risks associated with lithium-ion batteries. Most rechargeable batteries are lithium-ion, and so many electronics we use in our homes every day, including smartphones, tablets, power tools, e-cigarettes and toys are powered by lithium-ion batteries.

Damaged or improperly used lithium-ion batteries can overheat, start a fire or even explode. To reduce the risks, Red Deer Emergency Services’ Fire Prevention team recommend the following:

  1. Purchasing: When buying a lithium-ion battery-powered product, look for a stamp from a nationally-recognized testing lab on the packaging. This means it meets important safety standards. Unfortunately, many products sold online and in stores may not meet these standards and could increase the risk of fire.
  2. Charging: Always use the cord that came with the product to charge it. If you need a new charger, buy one from the manufacturer or one approved by the manufacturer.
    • Charge the device on a hard surface; never under a pillow, on a bed or a couch.
    • Don’t overcharge your device. Unplug it once it’s fully charged.
  3. Recycling: Don’t throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash or regular recycling bins. Visit ca to find a recycling option near you.
