First reading passed to extend interim shelter operations at Cannery Row

Council passed first reading to amend Land Use Bylaw 3357/M-2021 tonight to extend the ability for the interim shelter to continue operating at Cannery Row until May 31, 2022.  The Bylaw was amended by Council to ensure no expansion of the existing site operations. Administration made the recommendations to allow for the process of relocating to a new site.

“Developing a full list of site options has shown to be more extensive than originally anticipated, it includes not only choosing potential sites but also ensuring the property has the potential to facilitate shelter requirements, property owners are contacted, zoning requirements are considered, and public engagement is conducted,” said City Manager Allan Seabrooke. “We are confident that the one year extension for operating the shelter at Cannery Row would give administration and our community partners the time required to not only choose a site, but get the preliminary requirements in place to make the move.”

On April 7, Council directed administration to compile a list of potential sites throughout the community to bring back for consideration within four weeks. The report to be presented is expected to provide detailed information about process, timing and costs.

“We want to make sure that when a decision is made about where to move the interim shelter, we have all the necessary information so we are making not only an informed decision, but also the right one for the community and all involved and affected,” said Mayor Tara Veer. “Council will deliberate the amendment following a public hearing. As always we look forward to hearing what the public has to say on the matter.”

The Public Hearing will be held on May 25 during a regular Council Meeting. Following the public hearing, Council will consider second and third reading to allow for an extension.
