From August 13 to September 6, the Capstone community in downtown Red Deer will transform into a living gallery featuring an eclectic art installation, entitled OpenStory, which will fuel people’s sense of curiosity by presenting them with a temporary art installation using interactive doors.

The installation is located in nine outdoor locations across Capstone - and along Ross Street- and visitors are encouraged to discover each door to see the full and complete exhibit.

Imagined by the creative minds of Calgary’s B!G ART, the OpenStory exhibit consists of seven interactive portals which combined tell a visual story of space, science and community that is both intriguing and inspiring.

The eighth door installed at the corner of Alexander Way and Taylor Drive, the front door of the Capstone community, showcases the vision for a revitalized downtown Red Deer and depicts a modernized riverside community which will one day be home to 5,000 new residents. An additional ninth door has been installed on Taylor Drive and 49 Street to provide a photo opportunity to visitors.

“Capstone is a community that encourages freedom of thought and expression, where the future belongs to inquisitive minds, open hearts and curious souls. There is no better place to host this exhibit,” said Cory Edinga, Capstone Project Manager. “While art lovers and aficionados visit the OpenStory exhibit, they will move around the community and will see how it has shed its industrial history and is transforming into one of the city’s - indeed Alberta’s - coolest urban communities.”

For the past several years, the City of Red Deer has been advancing an ambitious redevelopment program for their former civic yards, literally transforming the community, brick by brick, creating beautiful public spaces and amenities while attracting new interest to the community.

“We are so excited to come to Capstone and have Red Deerians experience our interactive art installation. There’s a great deal of symbolism with OpenStory; the transformation of Capstone combined with the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions literally allows for the showcasing of the new community, and the opening of our homes and hearts again,” said Big Art, Chief Imagineer, Paul Magnusson.

Complementing the three-week art installation is a series of unique learning and creative experiences, opportunities to watch street artists and performers create artwork in real time, and chances for self-expression on canvas (or asphalt or brick).

“There is a great deal of artistic talent in Red Deer and we wanted to spotlight some of it during the OpenStory art exhibit by offering space for artists to share their inspirations with the public,” said Edinga.

OpenStory and community activities are free to all members of the public and no ticket is required. The exhibit will run from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.
