A new committee, transitioned from the Intermunicipal Collaboration Framework Joint Council Committee, was recently convened with the intent to build a stronger Central Alberta region and increase regional benefits.
The Regional Collaboration Committee (RCC) is comprised of the Mayors and two Councillors from both The City of Red Deer and Red Deer County Councils.
The committees’ purpose is to continue to act as a catalyst for growing partnership opportunity in the region, building off the work of the Intermunicipal Collaboration Framework (ICF). The RCC is a forum to discuss issues and opportunities that have impact to both local municipalities. The intent is for the committee to develop recommendations for collaboration efforts that support equitable regional partnership.
“The establishment of this new committee will work to build a long-lasting, mutually beneficial commitment to our region with a more formal structure,” said Mayor Tara Veer. “The committee will focus on addressing pending regional matters and negotiating additional joint partnerships and service opportunities to find efficiencies and better serve our citizens and local businesses.”
The committee will work on a list of prioritized regional collaboration matters outlined in the ICF, including but not limited to, the Red Deer Regional Airport, Westerner Park, community safety, social issues and regional economic development initiatives. The committee may have future amendments to the ICF in the coming months to recognize new capital partnerships and operating agreements.
“Through our continued collaboration, we will strengthen an already positive partnership with our neighbour,” stated Red Deer County Mayor, Jim Wood. “This increased collaboration structure with The City of Red Deer and Red Deer County will be a great benefit to citizens and businesses in our region.”
Representatives from both municipalities will continue to work together to continue to identify and discuss opportunities for intermunicipal collaboration. RCC is a recommendation-making committee, and all recommendations will be made to both Councils for decision-making.
Red Deer County Council will be reviewing this item at their July 6 County Council meeting.
