(Red Deer, Alberta)

Red Deer residents considering running in the coming municipal election have one week to submit their nomination forms.

The City of Red Deer is still accepting nominations for positions of Mayor, Councillor, and Public and Catholic School Board Trustees for the coming Election. Completed nomination forms must be filed by noon on Nomination Day, which is September 20.

While City Hall has reopened for customer service, many staff continue to work remotely. Prospective candidates are asked to contact Legal & Legislative Services at elections@reddeer.ca or 403-342-8132 to book an appointment to drop off nomination forms.

All candidates must be eligible to vote in the election and must be:

  • at least 18 years old,
  • a Canadian citizen,
  • a resident of the local jurisdiction and the ward, if any, for the six consecutive months immediately preceding nomination day;
  • not otherwise ineligible or disqualified.

As of September 13, 46 candidates had filed their nomination forms, including six for Mayor, 24 for Councillor, nine for Public School Trustee and seven for Catholic School Trustee (five for the Red Deer Area Ward and two for the QEII Ward. At this time, zero nominations have been submitted for the Highway 11 Ward.) Election Day is Monday, October 18, but Red Deer voters will have an additional 13 days to vote during the Advance Vote from October 4 to 16.

More information about the nomination process, including documentation requirements and nomination forms, can be found on the Elections website at elections.reddeer.ca.
