Statement from the Mayor

Mayor Johnston and Council statement on conflict in Ukraine

February 25, 2022 12:48 PM
(Red Deer, Alberta)

The news this week of the invasion and conflict in Ukraine has no doubt struck all Red Deerians to the core. Our collective hearts are with the Ukrainian people. There are no right words to say, but we see you and we send so much love and prayers to the people fearing and fighting for their lives.

Alberta and Red Deer is home to many people with connections to the eastern European country. Ukrainians have helped build the fabric of Alberta over the past century. The people of Ukraine are fighting in defense of Canadian values and, as Red Deerians, we must continue to support them to the best of our abilities.

I encourage everyone to reach out to people of Ukraine descent that you know within our community. Many fear for the safety of friends and family back home. They are struggling, they are watching with uncertainty the news at every waking moment. Send them your support, bring them meals, and ask them what we can do to help.

Citizens can also find a reputable place to provide monetary support if they have the means. The Canadian Red Cross has launched the Ukraine Humanitarian Crisis Appeal to respond to those affected by the ongoing conflict. Hungry for Life helps Ukrainians flee their country, or Charitable Foundation Voices of Children provides support programs for children affected by war in Ukraine.

I extend my support and deepest sympathies to all Ukrainian-Red Deerians who are affected by this unprovoked invasion of their homeland. This Sunday at noon, join me at City Hall Park where we will be gathering to show support to the people of Ukraine and Ukrainian-Red Deerians, organized by St. Vladimir Ukrainian Church here in Red Deer.

Red Deer City Hall will also be lit in blue and yellow in solidarity with Ukraine. We stand in support of our Ukrainian-Red Deerians, and the people who have close ties to their homeland during this terrifying time.”
