Statement from the Mayor

Mayor Johnston responds to hospital expansion announcement

February 23, 2022 12:34 PM
(Red Deer, Alberta)

“On behalf of Red Deer City Council and the citizens we serve, I want to share our overwhelming joy about the monumental announcement of $1.8 billion investment in Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre made this morning. This investment in our regional hospital has taken some time. However, I am optimistic the prioritization of our hospital will see improved capacity for life-saving treatment and care in the near future.

Yesterday, I had the honour of being the guest of Honourable Minister LaGrange at the Throne Speech, delivered by her Honour, the Honourable Salma Lakhani, at the Government of Alberta. It was an inspiring speech, full of hope and energetic resolve for our province. During the Throne Speech, her Honour said that “as restrictions begin to ease here and around the world, and as the signs of economic renewal take hold, we can begin to sense the beginning of an Alberta spring.”

Nowhere in our province this morning is the beginning of the Alberta spring more apparent than here in our beautiful city of Red Deer. For today my friends, today is a monumental day in the provision of health care in Red Deer and Central Alberta region.

As Alberta’s third largest metro region, the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre is the primary health service provider for our citizens, the Central Alberta regional population, and every Albertan travelling along the central QEII corridor, servicing a population of half a million people.

This is a day to recognize the advocacy of our medical professionals, our front-line workers, our local citizenry, the Mayors and Councils of our towns, counties and villages, all of whom spoke with one voice, one vision, one need.

This is a day to thank our provincial partners in Alberta Health Services and the Government of Alberta for their response to that advocacy, for delivering far more than a world class health facility to our City. This announcement is life saving, life affirming and life changing.

We look forward working alongside our healthcare professionals and government counterparts as we see this project progress and be complete by 2030.

On behalf once again of Council, our citizens and our surrounding neighbors in Central Alberta, thank you so much.”
