The Kinex Arena will close starting Monday, November 28 until Saturday, December 10 due to an unanticipated issue with the ice making equipment. This unexpected, mid-season closure will have impacts to all ice user groups.
During the closure, City crews will work to restore function to the ice making equipment on-site in hopes of continuing operation through to the end of the 2022/2023 indoor ice season.
“We recognize the closure of one of our ice surfaces is not ideal for our regular user groups, or for the public,” says Barb McKee, Recreation Superintendent. “We are working to maximize ice use at our existing arenas and are hopeful this disruption is short lived. The Kinex Arena is at the end of its useful life and this setback is evidence of that. We’re doing everything possible to keep the facility available for the community.”
Outdoor rinks are not yet open for public use, however McKee comments, “in an effort to create as much opportunity for ice use as possible, our Parks crews will be working to open some of our outdoor rinks earlier than anticipated, which will allow for spontaneous use and potential community bookings.”
Parks crews are aiming to open one of the boarded outdoor rinks in the Bower neighbourhood as early as Monday for sport group bookings. Sport groups can contact facilitybookings@reddeer.ca to learn more about this opportunity.
